The Bend Energy Challenge is Bend, Oregon’s team in the Georgetown University Energy Prize — a national competition to reduce energy use. After a two-year competition period, in 2015 and 2016, a $5 million prize will be awarded in July 2017 to the community that leads the way in reducing energy use. 50 cities and counties across the country are competing for the Energy Prize.
The Georgetown University Energy Prize challenges participating communities to tap their imagination and creativity and to work collaboratively to reduce energy use. It’s a great fit for Bend’s creative, competitive and entrepreneurial spirit, and presents a unique opportunity to organize and build momentum for clean, efficient and renewable energy in Bend.
The Energy Prize stakes are real: $5 million and meaningful change. But even if Bend does not win the competition, coming close will still be a real win for our community: we will significantly raise the visibility of energy efficiency and its benefits, and we will dramatically reduce our community’s energy use and carbon footprint.
